Honoring the Life of Dr. John Lowe

      The Ernest J. Gaines Center gives their deepest condolences to the family of beloved Dr. John Wharton Lowe, who passed away very unexpectedly on August 5th, 2023. Dr. Lowe was an incredible friend, biographer, and light in the life of Dr. Ernest J. Gaines, and the Center is saddened at the sudden loss of an avid supporter and dear friend.

     John Lowe was born August 10th, 1945, and received his PhD from Columbia University in 1981, after which he spent numerous years as a professor at both Louisiana State University and the University of Georgia, from which he recently retired. He is known for his authorship of several books and articles about the American South and African American Literature, including his most recent biography of Dr. Ernest J. Gaines, his long-time friend.

      His interment was held on August 24th, 2023, in Atlanta, GA. The full details of his life and legacy can be found on his obituary, linked here.
